Carthage downs Canton in non-league battle

The Carthage Comets defeated the Canton Golden Bears 56-52 Wednesday night in Canton in non-league high school basketball action.

Both teams played excellent defense in the first quarter, holding each other to under 10 points. The active Carthage 2-3 zone made it challenging for the Bears to get the ball where they wanted it. Despite this challenge, Canton got the ball to the interior of the zone breaking down the Comets defense to get a few uncontested layups. After trading baskets for most of the second quarter, Canton was able to obtain a three-point halftime lead.

The Golden Bears came out of the half with energy. The full court pressure applied by Canton led to turnovers allowing the Bears to jump to an 11-point lead early in the fourth quarter. At this time Carthage switched their defensive strategies which began to cause problems for Canton. The shift in defense allowed Carthage to go on a 20-5 run that resulted in the comeback road win.

Canton was lead by Andy Downs (16 points), Caleb Bentley Hick (eight points) and Sky Kennedy (eight points).
